The key idea

The oath normally completes adult naturalization; child citizenship and limited USCIS-approved oath waivers follow different rules.

Read the lesson

For most adults applying through Form N-400, approval is followed by the Oath of Allegiance. The oath normally completes naturalization. USCIS can approve an oath waiver in limited disability-related circumstances. A disability does not automatically mean the oath is waived.

Citizenship through a parent is a different process. Some children acquire citizenship automatically when all applicable legal requirements are met. Form N-600 can provide proof of citizenship already acquired; it does not create citizenship by itself.
